Pioneer DDJ-SZ - Profesional DJ Controller

Pioneer DDJ-SZ - Profesional DJ Controller
OVERVIEW

Pioneer DJ expands its family of Serato DJ Software controllers with the DDJ-SZ, its flagship model that strongly emulates the look and feel of Pioneer’s world-renowned CDJ digital players. The DDJ-SZ is designed for the serious “controller” DJs who are inspired by the performance specifications of Pioneer’s professional DJ products but also want the convenience of an all-in-one system. The new controller is 35 percent bigger than the widely popular DDJ-SX, sporting additional functionalities and features including extra large JOG wheels (the same size available on CDJ players), large performance pads with multi-color illumination, DJM style mixer, dual USB ports and a MAGVEL cross fader.

BIG JOG WHEEL
The most noticeable CDJ PRO gear integration to the DDJ-SZ is its large 8.1-inch JOG wheels. The JOG wheels provide instantaneous response and excellent operability for accurate and smooth scratching and mixing performance. The center of each JOG wheel also features “ON JOG display” to illustrate playback status, cue points and position. In addition, the unit offers a JOG FEELING ADJUST to enable users to change the resistance of the wheel from light to heavy for a customize feel.

PERFORMANCE PADS
Directly below each JOG wheel are four effects buttons – HOT CUE, ROLL, SLICER and SAMPLER. Under the effects buttons are eight extra large “performance pads” that DJs can quickly access to insert different modified effects to music playing. In Sampler mode, the output volume of the sampler effects also varies depending on the strength of user’s tap of the pad. An update from the current DDJ-S controllers, the performance pads on the DDJ-SZ illuminate in different colors to quickly communicate the effect mode it is in.

DUAL USB PORTS
The DDJ-SZ includes two USB ports to enable simultaneous connection of two computers. Users can instantly switch between two computers for seamless transitions between two DJs or as additional music sources.

HIGH-END MIXER

The mixing area of the DDJ-SZ also closely mimics Pioneer’s DJM series of professional mixers, utilizing a generous number of controls and effects with features including Sound Color FX and new Oscillator functions to deliver more creative music arrangements. The mixer can also be used as a standalone 4-channel mixer for outboard players and turntables.

  • Oscillator – The new Oscillator on the right side of the mixer provides four types of sound effects: Noise, Siren, Cymbal and Horn. A quick touch of the buttons activates the effect(s), which can also be modified in amplitude (volume) to add to the music currently playing.
  • Sound Color FX – The mixer includes four Sound Color FX functions (Pitch, Jet, Echo and Filter), which add numerous audio effect combinations and arrangements to currently playing music with a simple twist of the knobs. Through Serato DJ’s beats per minute (BPM) analysis, users can also synchronize Echo effects to the BPM of currently playing music.
  • DVS Functionality – The controller can support DVS (Digital Vinyl System)1 using control tone to enable an external player to be used as a Serato DJ deck.

MAGVEL CROSS FADER

For extremely smooth transitions and high durability between the DDJ-SZ’s players, the unit features a MAGVEL cross fader (the same component used in Pioneer’s DJM-900SRT) that utilizes a contact-free magnetic system that can withstand more than 10 million operations. The “cut in” time of the cross fader can also be customized to the user’s preference.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

  • Serato DJ Software – Bundled with the DDJ-SZ for an easy out-of-the-box experience.
  • Slip Mode – While activated, Slip Mode silently continues song playback during a performance loop, scratch or hot cue and resumes audible playback when the loop, scratch, or hot cue operation is ended, creating smoother and more seamless transitions.
  • Needle Search – Users can immediately jump to a specific part of a music track with a simple touch of the Needle Search pad.
  • High Quality Audio – A low-jitter clock and high-performance digital-to-analog converter (DAC) are used for accurate audio playback. In addition to a 24-bit digital signal processor to minimize digital noise, its balanced hybrid operational amplifier and balance output circuit also reduce analog circuit noise.
  • Built-in Sound Card (audio interface)
  • P-LOCK Fader Cap – Prevents the fader knob from slipping off during extreme use.
  • Auto Standby – Automatically switches to standby mode when no activity or input is detected for a period of time.

Toxic Biohazard

Toxic Biohazard is the 4th generation in the line of Toxic synthesizers vst from FL Studio. Toxic Biohazard distills the best features from the previous 3 versions to deliver our most concentrated Toxic ever. Beware!

Hybrid Synthesis.

Toxic Biohazard features a hybrid synthesis engine, combining the best of FM and Subtractive synthesis. With the addition of a warm, analog-modelled filter and set of built-in effects, the Toxic concept remains one of convenience, simplicity, and superb sound quality.

Toxic Biohazard includes following enhancements...

  • Optimized engine. Improved the sound quality, with even more accurate waveshapes, and quicker rendering times.
  • "Physical" envelopes (amplitude and filter) physical modelling of how sounds in real world decay & resonate, for example, the sound of a water drop. Further, physical envelopes are rendered
  • real-time without any interpolation, avoiding noise artifacts and allowing Toxic Bio to deliver fast, accurate envelope times.
  • Pack of new effects: phaser, reverb, ...

The FM technology

One of the ‘warmest’, crisp, and clear Frequency Modulation engines in the world, owes its sound to the precise calculation of the digital signal. Due to high-resolution DSP processing, it produces sound with an extremely low noise threshold; something that most FM engines cannot offer. The Toxic Biohazard sound was built from the ground up, via our own unique mathematical calculations and analog-modelling techniques.

The Oscillators

Completely alias-free, and well tuned for all sampling rates, they produce a rich, "fat" sound all across the spectrum. Due to the high quality of the anti-aliasing process, users will not encounter the shredding noise on high frequencies that has plagued FM synthesis in the past. Furthermore, the oscillators are calculated at extremely high speeds, keeping your CPU usage to a minimum. Toxic’s low CPU consumption affords the user plenty of room for external processing and running multiple instances. The oscillators also come equipped with Maxx Claster’s own powerful spectrum analysis technology. This allows the user to create his or her own waveforms, via the simple process of loading a WAV or AIFF format sound file. All of these features make the oscillators very flexible, and allow for the use of both synthetic and acoustic waveforms within Toxic. Each oscillator also comes with 32 built in ‘classic’ waveforms, each shown to be the most useful in FM synthesis.

The Effects

Made to assure high quality and flexibility is built into the synthesizer its self, Toxic Biohazard aims to reduce the need for external processing altogether! The effect modules are designed to give the user access to several types of effects, from aggressive, tube-like distortion, to warm stereo delay, reverb, flanger, and phaser effects. With our own pro-quality tape delay emulation, based on non-fixed delay buffer sizes, instead of the usual methods incorporated within digital delays, our delay lines give you warm sound, with “true” feedback and modulation. Lastly, the signal chain features an analog-modelled, parametric equalizer to further shape your sound. The EQ provides access to crisp, clear high-end definition, creamy mid ranges and earth-shaking low-end frequencies. The Toxic Biohazard effect modules expands its palette of sound to include everything from dark, atmospheric textures to razor sharp leads, fit to slice easily through any mix.

The Filter

Maxx Claster's own analog-modelled, multimode filter is reminiscent of a certain silver box of old. Garnishing a warm, resonant Low-Pass mode, a smooth Band-Pass setting, and a creamy High-Pass mode, Toxic Biohazard gives a wealth of control over tone. The filter is further enhanced by modulation via a dedicated envelope generator and low frequency oscillator, as well as responding to velocity information and keyboard tracking. These features allow for extreme sound shaping, as well as subtle nuances attributed to dynamic playing.

The Sequencer

Powerful, yet simple, the sequencer offers a total of 64 steps, which can be divided into two independent, 32 step modules to allow double-polyphonic patterns. Using our own "Smart Sequencer" technology, when a chord is played, the module defines that chord, and tunes the pattern accordingly. The sequencer also allows for pure playback of the programmed sequence from single notes. Simply holding one chord can virtually create an arrangement for you!

ADR Taker 2.0 — Integrated system for voice & foley recording

Nuendo’s ADR Taker system — the world’s most powerful integrated system for voice and foley recording — has been extended in Nuendo 6.5 with important enhancements that make vocal and foley recording an incomparably fast and convenient experience.

Video overlay and take list improvements

Review and edit speaker texts (video overlay) in stop mode, ideal for working with scripts which need modification during the recording session or even when the speaker’s already preparing for the next scene. Other important additions are the improved re-naming functions in the ADR marker window, making it easy to edit attributes of different markers at the same time (such as character name). It’s also possible to record several takes successively in one batch by freely selecting the appropriate scenes in the marker window, including a constant update of the dialog video overlay.

The newly added ADR Status indicator (colored light including red light) easily shows the actor the status of the ADR process inside the video window.

Automated naming scheme and recording

Thanks to the new audio file naming scheme functions, the upgraded Nuendo ADR Taker now adds configurable attributes to the file name of each recording, making it even easier to search and find different recordings/roles. ADR Taker 2.0 also enables you to record automatically on user-defined tracks by pre-assigning a track to a specific role. The performance of the speaker is automatically recorded on the assigned track, making it a breeze to manage large ADR sessions with multiple roles on different tracks.

Record anywhere in Free mode

The ADR Taker 2.0 introduces Free mode, a new function that allows utmost flexibility for ADR work. The Free mode enables you to start recordings at any point in the timeline, independently from the given marker/take structure of the ADR marker list. This means that you can just start the recording and let the speaker perform multiple scenes in one go, if desired. You can even set the start point of recordings within a longer scene (for example, second half of the scene) without the need to start the scene and wait for the playback to reach the desired position, speeding up the whole ADR process. Additionally, you can switch between rehearse and record process spontaneously, enhancing the entire quality of the ADR process.

Professional foley recordings

The ADR Taker 2.0 is the perfect tool to also manage foley recording sessions more easily and flexibly. The powerful ADR take-list can be used to mark foley-relevant scenes and capture the foley artist’s performance accordingly. By using the new Free mode, the foley recording is not even bound to the end point of each single scene, making it easy to record longer foley takes in one go. Thanks to the automated naming scheme, foley files can be retrieved and used in the project on the basis of individual naming attributes such as the character name or foley specific topics like “underground” or “material.” All this plus numerous further functions such as the ADR status indicator (rehearse / record / review) and a function for adding second “swipes” make the Nuendo ADR Taker 2.0 the world’s most powerful integrated system for voice and foley recording.

Plug-ins for professional post-production

Bass Manager: Perfect bass frequency management

The Bass Management plug-in brings additional tools to Nuendo 6.5 for routing and filtering low-frequency signals. Among the flexible new options are the ability to send a user-definable frequency range from the main mix directly to a subwoofer; this offers a lightning-fast way of separating bass frequencies from a main mix, for example, if the mix has been completed without a dedicated LFE channel.

Another new option is the ability to send a portion of the LFE channel to the main center or left/right speakers using the built-in crossover frequency controls. The final stage of dedicated filtering for the frequencies allocated to a subwoofer is the dedicated subwoofer section. Before/after metering offers a convenient visual representation of the levels routed to and from the new plug-in.

Smooth mixing with REVelation reverb

Developed in conjunction with seasoned engineers and film mixers, Nuendo 6.5 comes with a super-rich and silky algorithmic reverb which recreates the vibe and character of famous hardware effects. REVelation offers a maximum degree of depth and adds its spatial magic on just about any instrument or sound, from string sections to lead vocals. Included with dozens of useful presets, REVelation will let your mix shine.

The return of a legend: Magneto 2

Magneto 2 not only provides a warm, analog sound but also adds exciting new features such as the dual mode to give your tracks more flavor and personality — just like in the old days. And Magneto 2 lets you select the frequency range of the effect to be applied on your track. Magneto 2 offers more analog warmth and character to your digital world.

For several reasons. To begin with, there are too many subtractive synthesizers already, often bragging about being virtual analog. This one is digital, and proud to be. Everything is fake, the tone generator, the filter & its resonance, the phaser, all performed on the harmonics, before partials are computed.

Now, how it's synthesized shouldn't matter after all, if the result sounds subtractive. But Harmless is more than a proof of concept, it allows fine control that wouldn't be possible through classic subtractive synthesis. Filtering and phasing can be assigned unusual shapes & slopes, something normally only possible through offline digital filters. Filter slopes can even be defined in Hz instead of octaves. Finally, you get control on each partial's frequency, creating timbres definitely impossible using common synthesis methods.

Harmless, for less harmonics

Again, Harmless is additive doing subtractive. Harmonics are not produced to be filtered, the timbre is filtered before being generated. This may sound like a detail, but generating sounds this way offers a lot more advantages than drawbacks.

Not necessarily less efficient

Powered by a highly optimized, multithreaded additive engine, CPU usage is comparable to the one of traditional subtractive synthesizers, especially for low-passed timbres. Voices may be generating hundreds of harmonics in parallel and still not overload the CPU.

Because less is more

Harmless was limited by design. We don't have any problem with complex synthesizers (we made several), but they're not for everyone. Here, no tabs, no hidden controls, no multipoint envelopes, all features are visible at once, and color-grouped. Over 100 parameters, most of which being automatable, are laid over a clear GUI.

Harmless, only in appearance

Simpler to program, yet packed with evil features. Under the hood, you will find unique options, like linking the phaser's output to partials frequencies. The LFO section can act as a special modulation source, linking the phaser's width to the velocity, or the pitch to the filter's envelope.

Of course, Harmless also offers features typically unique to additive synthesis, like its automatable harmonic mask.

Harmless is also packed with effects, the usual chorus, delay & reverb, but also a multiband compressor/limiter powered by Maximus itself. It also inherited the powerful unison from Sytrus.

In conclusion, our goal was to create a subtractive synthesizer with a unique twist, that also was easy to program, and we believe it succeeded.
